In 1895, the Prince of Wales Opera House in Bourke Street was leased by Harry Rickards as the Melbourne home of his Tivoli vaudeville circuit. He built the New Opera House on the site in 1901 and it was renamed the Tivoli Theatre in 1912. The Tivoli operated as a live theatre until 1966. It was then used as a cinema until damaged by fire and demolished in 1967. The site is now occupied by the Tivoli Arcade. From the description of Records. 1895-1966. (Libraries Australia).
